Additional informations

Construction of a 50 megawatt hydroelectric generation station on the Kwoiek Creek, a tributary of the Fraser River

Main Work Performed

  • Diversion canal
  • Water intake including Coanda type debris trap, dam, spillway and environmental control bay
  • 7.5 km underground penstock, four aerial river crossings and one crossing dug under rail tracks
  • Construction of the generating station
  • Construction of a substation
  • Construction of roads and development
  • General coordination of works excluding power lines

Special Features of the Work and Methods Used

  • Over 100 workers on the site
  • Site access is from the right bank of the Fraser River, while the work is on the left bank and without an access road. This required installing a cable crane from Austriat that was specially designed for the project. It is used both for transporting workers and for materials weighing up to 20 tons. Equipment weighing more than 20 tons must be transported by train
  • Coordination and ensuring that the access road to the water intake remains viable while the penstock is being installed
  • Crushing and sieving of aggregates done on site
  • Portable batch plant operating on site
  • Environmental protection including waste discharge and sedimentation
  • Organization of the site using various strategies that can be adapted to wet and to dry environments
